The Oppression Chair

Jeongwoo Kim, Seongeun Lee

It is a work that personifies and expresses the injustice and frustration of a convenience store chair, which has been reduced from a necessity to a useless existence due to the prolonged corona virus. As I was working on this project, I looked at the chairs in the convenience store and saw that the current chairs were tied at a glance or completely organized and locked inside the building. I thought that these figures were like being trapped in a ‘prison’ of the chair, and I tried to personify the chair to express and convey the emotions of the chair as it is. Since chairs cannot speak or move, we tried to convey emotions through a medium called fabric. Outstretched hands in the fabric convey the feeling of jumping on their own, sometimes desperately asking for help. It gave the whole work a grotesque feeling, reminding us of memories, and allowed us to empathize and intuitively feel the emotions of the chair.

We set the biggest title of empathy for the chair, and created an object that can sympathize with the audience and personify the chair rather than thinking of it as a simple object.

Layer with time

Empathy to each other by sharing time and give strength to each other. The two chairs have different shapes. However, you can find something in common on the legs of the chair. The legs have the same layer. Even chairs of different shapes can be closer and more supportive through empathy that they share the same things.

23 years of the tome spent on chairs.

For a long time, happy moments and enjoyable moments.

A passionate attitude.

The experience of being completely immersed in something.

Feels like I’m breathing in the wind.

The day I ate delicious food with someone.

and

When I can’t see anything.

When sadness swallows all the emotions.

It feels like there’s no one around me.

When I’m not motivated.

All this time

It allowed me to be who I am today.

So whenever I look at the chair with me,

I gain strength.

It’s not just a chair, it’s a chair that spent a lot of time with me.

When you are struggling and lonely,

Remember the times we spent together,

 Process.
